Summary: A lot of control, really smooth coffee, not espresso and not in 30 seconds.
Comment: There is a lot of hype in the advertisements for this product.

You have a lot of control. Of course you could always grind your coffee however you like but without a filter (such as a French press), or a filter that gets easily clogged (such as a drip coffee maker) it has it's limitations. But in this case you can grind it however you like the taste. I'd go for fine. You can use water whatever temperature you like (I like it boiling). You can let it steep for a while (although it will eventually drip through the filter unless you use as much ground coffee as I do), and you can add as much ground coffee as you like (within the limits of the volume of the maker but you can do that with any maker anyway). By varying these factors you can control a lot more of how your coffee turns out.

No matter what I do it turns out smooth. Almost too smooth for me, but many people will love the smoothness. I miss the bitterness and the taste of the cream it took to mellow it.

But no matter how you cut it espresso has a very specific definition and this does not make espresso. Espresso involves boiling water, more pressure and no paper filters. This is neither a good nor a bad thing, it's just the facts. It is much more mellow than Espresso.

It also takes much more than 30 seconds to make your coffee with this. Even starting from the coffee already ground and the water already hot, it takes more than 30 seconds. I'm not complaining, just pointing out reality.

Still it's my favorite coffee maker for traveling or work as the cleanup is simple and I only need somewhere to microwave the water and a cup to make it in (and of course the coffee maker and filters). It's much easier to clean up than a French press and I can grind the coffee much finer (espresso grind) than the French press and end up with stronger coffee.

I have two: one for travel and one for work.

Summary: Awesome
Comment: I'm never using a French press again. It took me a long time to make great coffee on a French press and days to get the hang of it on the Aero. It's faster, less acidic and easy to clean up.

Summary: Big problem! Better than expected...
Comment: I asked for the AeroPress for Christmas to use at at work. On Christmas morning I used it for the first time to try it out. The coffee tasted great! Having already played with my new toy... I switched to the already made drip coffee. What a difference. Now I don't want to take it to work. I guess I'll need to order another one.

Summary: Great convenient way to make espresso and American style coffee
Comment: I got this coffee maker to see if it would improve the taste of my morning cup of coffee. It looked a little complicated when I took it out of the box, but once I read the directions and started using it, it really did improve the taste of my coffee. My coffee went from having a bitter taste to have little to no bitterness at all. I used to put a lot of flavored creamer in it, to sort of mask the bitterness, but I actually like the taste of the coffee all by itself now that I have the new press. The only complaint is that it is sometimes hard to press down because the grounds form a sort of plug at the bottom (fix this by adding a little more water and stirring it again), and you need to have a coffee grinder with a fine ground or espresso setting because if the grounds are too coarse the water will drip through the filter too fast making the coffee too weak. Overall, this coffee maker is easy, cheap, and has greatly improved the taste of my morning coffee.

Summary: Too much hype
Comment: I like this product but I don't use it often, as I find it very tricky to use properly. Don't believe the claims that it is simple. From the moment you put the hot water in, it will begin dripping. This is the biggest problem, since it means you had better set up your cup under the product beforehand, and probably it will not work to bring the product to the water source, like office water heater, so you need to bring the hot water to the product. Basically, every time I use it it seems to spill, or I wind up adding the wrong amount of water because you have to move fast before it drips through, if you want to take advantage of the pressure feature to get the most flavor.

I also don't think it is much superior in flavor to a good French Press, and I personally prefer the French Press because it doesn't use a filter-- I like my coffee with all the oils and even sediment, so having a paper filter to me is not an improvement, although people who like their coffee clear will like the paper filter feature. The filters are very inexpensive, which is good.

It makes an excellent cup of coffee if you master it, but it falls short of the extraordinary claims in the advertising. It also doesn't make espresso... it makes a drink with espresso qualities that tastes good, but don't think you are getting an espresso maker.
